The history of these islands goes back to 1609when a ship call the Sea Venture was destroyed at sea by a hurricane and the occupants of the boat, colonists going to Jamestown Virginia, ended up landing on the island. They called the islands Somers islands after the Admiral Sir George Somers whom the Sea Venture was under command when it was destroyed.
The colonists later built two boats out of the remains of the first and set sail for a second time to Jamestown Virginia. In 1612 60 Englishmen became the first permanent residents of the island where the town of St. George served as capital until in was moved to the city of Hamilton in 1815.
